While there are quite a number of cute lap dogs out there, this post focuses solely on those popular in Nigeria.

Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso is one of the most common dog breeds in Nigeria and one of the oldest recognized breeds in the world. This dog hails from Tibet where it was used to guard palaces and Buddist temples (its bark alerted residents of intruders), it often worked in conjunction with the Tibetan Mastiff; the Lhasa provided the bark while the mastiff provided the bite.  Although the Lhasa is now a companion dog the breed is still alert and is a good watchdog. The breed is fun and energetic, and very nice looking especially when well groomed (grooming can be tedious).

Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a breed very similar to the Lhasa Apso in terms of size and general appearance. The true origin of this Chinese lapdog is unknown, although some think it originated from Tibet and was developed in China. This toy breed was bred solely for companionship and was owned exclusively by Chinese royalty.  The dog is known to be affectionate even to strangers.  Just like the Lhasa Apso this breed requires constant grooming.

Pug

A number of people probably wouldn’t find this breed cute in the slightest but I think there is something beautiful about its buggy eyes. No one knows for sure of the origin of the Pug, but researchers speculate that the breed originated from Asia where it was bred to be companions for ruling families and was highly valued by Chinese Emperors. The breed is spirited, loyal, affectionate, and easy to groom. Modern Pugs are small, stocky, square and thickset but old images of the breed shows a long and lean breed, which means the breed standard changed at some point.

French Bulldog

Of all the breeds listed here, the French Bulldog is the most expensive in Nigeria. The breed is closely related to the English bulldog and have two distinctive features which are its bat ears and half flat, half-domed skull. While bred primarily as pets and companions in present times, the breed was originally developed for ratting. Frenchies, as they are sometimes called are very intelligent and serve as good watchdogs. Like other bulldogs, little of the breed’s hereditary aggression remains, and the dog makes an affectionate and playful pet. One complication with owning a female French Bulldog is that it will most likely have to deliver pups by cesarean section because puppies have relatively large heads, of course, if you don’t intend to mate the female you never have to worry about this.

If you don’t have the time or patience for grooming, the last two breeds listed are for you. If you think there are any cute lap dogs that I left out, comment below.
